Detectives investigating apparent murder/suicide

Sheriff’s Office detectives are investigating the apparent murder/suicide of a Big Pine Key couple.

The husband and wife were found shortly after 12 a.m. Thursday in a trailer on Avenue D.

According to detectives, the husband called a friend and said that he had just shot his wife at her request given she was suffering from an incurable medical condition. He also reportedly told the friend he intended to turn the gun on himself. That friend called the Sheriff’s Office. Detectives said their investigation also indicated the couple had also been dealing with the stress of Hurricane Irma.

A firearm was located next to the man. Detectives say both appeared to have died of gunshot wounds consistent with a murder suicide, but the investigation remains ongoing.

Notification of next-of-kin has been made and the couple were identified as Leslie Arthur Weston (male), 53, and Arlene Mira Weston (female), 59, of 31568 Avenue D.
