During the October City Commission meeting, Key West Police Chief Sean Brandenburg swore in Randy Smith, promoting him from Captain to the new position of Deputy Chief.

Deputy Chief Smith has been serving the Key West Police Department since 2005. Before coming to the Department, Smith worked as an insurance fraud investigator. He is the son of a retired Coral Springs Police Department Sergeant.

In his time with the Key West Police, he has served as a road patrol officer, general case detective, special operations detective, the team leader of the Dive Team, Underwater Search and Rescue Team Leader, and, like his father, an internal affairs inspector.

He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2015, Lieutenant in August of 2018, and promoted to Captain in December of 2018, heading up, alternately, both the Administrative and Operations Bureaus.

Deputy Chief Smith has received numerous accolades and awards, including the Life Saving Award, Chief’s Commendation, Unit Award, Officer of the Quarter, Officer of the Half, and Man of Valor.  In 2020, he graduated from the 279th Session of the FBI National Academy Program held in Quantico, Virginia.

Deputy Chief Smith is actively involved in the community, serving as the Police Athletic League President and volunteering with the Special Olympics and Autism Society of the Keys. He generously donates his time to various civic groups in the Lower Keys, demonstrating his commitment to community service.
