Commission Chambers were filled Thursday night with community members in support of Israel.

Commission Passes Resolution in Support of Israel

The Key West City Commission, with a large supportive crowd in attendance, unanimously passed a resolution Thursday in support of Israel and condemning the terrorist attacks by Hamas militants.

The October 7th attack killed hundreds of Israeli civilians and injured hundreds more. The terrorists have taken innocent civilian hostage and have continued the attacks. On October 8th, Israel declared was against Hamas, the Palestinian militant group based in Gaza.

Vice Mayor Sam Kaufman sponsored the resolution, noting that many people in Key West lost friends or family in the attack.

“This is a horrific time for many of us in the Jewish community,” he said. “A lot of us are experiencing trauma.”

He thanked the community – Jewish and non-Jewish – who have reached out to comfort those whose lives are affected by the attacks.

“The City Commission of the City of Key West hereby mourns lives lost through the violent acts against Israel,” reads the resolution, “and stands allied with Israel as it defends itself in the war set off by the terrorist organization Hamas.”
