Continue to Follow All Basic Public Health Practices

(Monroe County, Fla) – The Florida Department of Health in Monroe County recommends residents and visitors follow basic public health precautions as diseases rise, including COVID-19, monkeypox, hepatitis A, and meningitis.

“There are still public health threats and a great deal of COVID in the county.  Although it isn’t as virulent as the original strain, it can cause illness,” said Bob Eadie, Health Officer and Administrator for the department.

Residents are reminded to practice good public health habits in general.  This includes washing hands regularly, wearing a mask around others when in public indoors, staying home if ill and seeking care, and getting up to date with all vaccines and booster shots.  Check if you are up to date with vaccines and boosters, especially against COVID-19.  Certain groups of people should also determine if they are eligible to receive the meningitis and hepatitis A vaccines.

It is also important to avoid having multiple sex partners and needle sharing.  Following these basic practices can help you and others avoid spreading infection, thereby protecting the ones you love and those around you.
