Boat fire reported in Marathon Thursday morning

The Sheriff’s Office was notified at approximately 10:30 a.m. of a boat fire in Boot Key Harbor.

The U.S. Coast Guard and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission also responded.

The boat remained on fire as of 11:30 a.m.  There were no reported major injuries as of that time.

The FWC is the investigating agency.


Man arrested for shooting gun

An 18-year-old Tavernier man was arrested Wednesday for shooting a handgun in a public place. There were no reported injuries.

Zachary Thomas Armstrong was charged with firing a weapon in public.

Detectives responded at 7:45 a.m. on June 8 to an area near Mile Marker 89 regarding a shots fired complaint. Multiple spent 9mm shell casings were found. It appeared the shots were fired at a wooden utility pole.

Armstrong was interviewed on June 14 and admitted to shooting a handgun. Warrants were filed for his arrest.

Armstrong was booked into jail Wednesday.


Speeding motorist arrested

A 29-year-old Ocean Reef employee was arrested Wednesday after fleeing from a Deputy and reaching speeds of 100 mph on U.S. 1.

George Cesar Acosta Mojica was charged with fleeing and eluding, driving with a suspended license, driving with expired license, possession of marijuana, possession of synthetic cannabinoids and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was also cited for speeding.

Deputy Jason Farr recorded a red Mercury car traveling 79 mph northbound on U.S. 1 at Mile Marker 93 at approximately 11:11 p.m. Deputy Farr attempted a traffic stop, but the red car did not stop. The red car reached speeds of 100 mph and then slowed to 60 mph and 30 mph. The red car made a U-turn near Mile Marker 100 and then stopped in the right southbound lane.

Deputy Farr and assisting Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Officers found Acosta Mojica to be the driver and only occupant.

Acosta Mojica was taken to jail.
