3G cell phone networks to be phased out

The Federal Communications Commission is alerting citizens that mobile network providers are shutting down their 3G networks this year to make room for more advanced services such as 5G.

As a result, old cell phones using 3G networks will be unable to make or receive calls or texts, use data services and perhaps most importantly: make calls to 911.

AT&T announced it will shut down its 3G networks by the end of this month with Verizon and T-Mobile announcing they are expected to do the same in the coming months.

Note: If your mobile provider is not one of the above, you may still be affected. Many smaller mobile providers rely on the above big three company’s networks to operate.

3G stands for third generation as it is the third type of technology made widely and commercially available for connecting cell phones.

Most cell phone users are currently on updated networks, but the FCC warns there is still a small percentage of users on 3G.

If you are unsure, the Sheriff’s Office urges you to contact your mobile network provider and inquire further.
