Monroe County Education Foundation is now
seeking mentors, applicants for Take Stock program

scholarships become available to students in higher grades as well.

Local students have recorded some of the highest participation rates in Take Stock, which is funded by the Monroe County Education Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, and Licis expects this trend to continue.
“We’re in excellent shape this year, scholarship-wise,” he said. “And this year we also have a dozen dorm scholarships to award to the members of the graduating class of 2016.”
In addition to the paid tuition, exceptional students may also quality for Bright Futures scholarships that could help them graduate college debt-free.
The prospect has Key West High School students, in particular, working hard to take advantage of the opportunity.
“We have the largest number of students in Take Stock in the entire state right here,” said Key West High School Success Coach Denise Gil-Perez. “And this year we’re going to be expanding the help we’re offering to the kids in the program. We’re going to have a new workshop called Future Plans to help them get focused on their goals. At the moment, we also have a need for about 10 mentors for students who are already in the program, who have lost them due to life circumstances, or other reasons.”
Mentors are paired with Take Stock students for the duration of their participation in the program, hopefully, and meet with them once per week to discuss their progress.
Beginning next month, Take Stock will be holding beginning of the year gatherings, for students, parents, and mentors, in all regions of the Keys.
On Sept. 15, meetings will be held at Horace O’Bryant School and Key West High School. The next day, it will be the turn of those at Sugarloaf School. On Sept. 16, the meeting moves to Marathon Middle High, and by Sept. 17, Coral Shores, Key Largo School, and Plantation Key School student will have their turn to meet their mentors, and have the program explained to them.
