With a sloppy effort by the home team, the Key West High baseball team’s win streak ended at five Saturday night as Stoneman Douglas got a split of the weekend series at Rex Weech Field by defeating the Conchs, 9-6.

Key West committed five errors, all in the infield as pitchers Jay Feathers and Damon Taylor had one each, as did second baseman Anthony Henriquez, shortstop Greg Veliz and Feathers at third base.

The Conchs, now 8-2, go on the road this coming week, in a major District 16-4A contest at 6 p.m., Tuesday, at Ransom Everglades and in a non-district game at 4 p.m., Saturday at Keys Gate.

With Feathers starting the game on the mound, Douglas took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth before Taylor relieved him. In the bottom of the inning, the Conchs, as has been their custom in the fourth, came up with four runs on three hit batsmen, a walk and a two-run single by Hugo Valdes.

That lead was not to last, however, as the Eagles scored three in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh, all with the sophomore, Taylor, on the mound. In all, Douglas pitchers walked eight batters.

Key West had seven hits, two singles by Valdes, a triple and a single by Veliz, a single and a double by Chris Varela and a single by Steve Wells.
