Writers’ Workshop Scholarships Available to Locals

Key West, Florida – The Key West Literary Seminar is pleased to announce a limited number of full scholarships for local Monroe County poets and writers in its Writers’ Workshop Program.

The workshops will be held in Key West from January 10-14, 2023. Class times are Wednesday, Jan. 11 through Saturday, Jan. 14, from 10 am to 1 pm and an evening dinner on Tuesday, January 10. Full fee waivers are available for two workshops, those taught by Roxana Robinson, Dantiel W. Moniz, and Tyehimba Jess.

Robinson’s workshop, “A Deep Dive into Short Stories,” is for avid readers who want to learn more about the work of master writers. The workshop will explore the mysterious inner workings of great literature looking at how a short story can succeed in engaging readers on the aesthetic, intellectual, and emotional level. Moniz’s workshop, “Emotional Hotspots – How to Find the Emotional Truth of Your Story and Create Layering and Depth,” is a critique-based workshop for short story writers looking to find the heat and pulse in their stories, taking a first or second draft to the next level. Students will be asked to submit an early draft of a short story in advance of the workshop. More information and apply here: kwls.org/workshops/dantiel-w-moniz

Jess’s workshop, “Documentary Poetics v. American History: Beyond Critical Race Theory to See Reality,” is a generative poetry workshop. Students also have the opportunity to submit three poems to discuss. All are welcome to engage in this timely discussion and work on enlivening and deepening their own work. Prior knowledge of the theme is not required. More information and apply here: www.kwls.org/workshops/tyehimba-jess

The five-day Writers’ Workshop Program provides writers at all stages of development with opportunities to explore the craft of writing. Enrollment is limited to twelve participants per workshop to ensure individual attention. The Workshop Program is distinct from the Key West Literary Seminar, which takes place the same week.
