Woman in stolen car caught after fleeing hospital

A 53-year-old Dexter, Michigan woman was arrested Friday night after she was stopped in a stolen rental car, but then ran out of Mariners Hospital where she was being medically examined.

Barbara Jean Harber was charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle and resisting arrest.

The Sheriff’s Office received information 4:30 p.m. Friday that a gray Nissan Altima® had been reported stolen by Roam Rental Car® in Miami-Dade County. Sgt. James Hager and Deputy Victor Morales spotted the car traveling southbound at Mile Marker 102 on U.S. 1 and stopped it. Harber admitted she was behind on payments to the rental car company, but believed she could work out a solution, thus she continued to drive the vehicle. Harber appeared to be ill and was dry heaving. She taken to Mariners Hospital in Tavernier.

Harber ran out of her room at the hospital, through the front entrance and toward the McDonald’s® restaurant. An employee there told Deputies a woman was hiding in a dumpster behind the business.

Harber was taken back to the hospital where she was medically cleared.

Harber was taken to jail thereafter.
