Woman arrested for battery on a Deputy and nurse

A 40-year-old homeless woman was arrested Saturday afternoon for kicking and clawing at Deputies and then attempting to bite a nurse at Fishermen’s Hospital in Marathon.

Melody Sunshine Carter was charged with resisting arrest with violence, battery on a law enforcement officer and batter on an emergency medical worker.

Deputies Darrel Walraven and Lauren McKnight responded to a 3:37 p.m. call of two suspicious persons near the Marathon library and found them near 26th Street. The caller stated a man appeared to be putting his arm around a woman who kept pushing him away. Both people appeared to be very intoxicated.

As the Deputies were attempting to talk with the pair, the woman, later identified as McCarter kept walking away. At one point, McCarter began pushing Deputy Walraven. He and the other male suspect attempted to calm McCarter, but her behavior became more combative. Both Deputies were eventually able to handcuff McCarter, but they had to force her into the patrol car.

They then took her to Fishermen’s Hospital due to a cut on her arm whereupon she began kicking Deputy Walraven and attempted to bite a nurse. McCarter eventually appeared to be calming down when she got up and attempted to run out of the hospital, again becoming physically combative.

McCarter was medically cleared at the hospital and taken to jail.
