Wilkinson Point at Harry Harris Park in Tavernier Reopens after Hurricane Irma Repairs

TAVERNIER, FL – Monroe County is pleased to announce the reopening of Wilkinson Point at Harry Harris Park in Tavernier. The point was closed following extensive damage from Hurricane Irma in 2017. Through the hard work of Monroe County staff and project manager Suzi Rubio, the park was reopened Wednesday to the delight of the residents in the neighborhood.

Rubio and local historian Jerry Wilkinson, no relation to the Wilkinson’s the point is named after, told fun stories of the area and the naming of the point. According to local lore, the late Kay Wilkinson, a longtime resident of the neighborhood, spent most evenings on the point. As a result, the area affectionately became known as hers.

The beach area at Harry Harris Park is currently closed for the next few months for jetty repairs also stemming from Hurricane Irma. The rest of the park remains open. The repairs are being done through Hurricane Irma repair grant funding.
