Wildfires Continue to Threaten Florida Keys Amid Drought Conditions

By KONK Life Staff

The Florida Keys are facing an increased risk of wildfires due to prolonged drought conditions and elevated temperatures. Recent data indicates that Monroe County, which encompasses the Keys, has a Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) exceeding 500, signifying severe drought and heightened fire danger.

The KBDI measures soil dryness on a scale from 0 (saturated) to 800 (desert-like conditions). A reading above 500 indicates significant drought stress, making vegetation more susceptible to ignition. As of April 4, 2025, Monroe County’s KBDI stands at 525, underscoring the severity of the current conditions.

Compounding the risk, the region is experiencing unseasonably high temperatures. Forecasts predict highs reaching the mid-80s to low 90s°F (29-33°C) over the coming days, which is atypical for this time of year. These elevated temperatures, low humidity, and persistent drought create an environment conducive to wildfires.

The 344 Fire in neighboring Miami-Dade County serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers. This wildfire burned approximately 26,719 acres and led to the temporary closure of Card Sound Road, one of the primary routes connecting the mainland to the Florida Keys. While the 344 Fire is now reported to be 100% contained, it highlights the vulnerability of the region to such events.

In response to these conditions, authorities have implemented burn bans in several counties, including nearby Collier and Hendry. While Monroe County has not yet issued a burn ban, residents and visitors are urged to exercise extreme caution. The Florida Forest Service emphasizes the importance of adhering to local regulations and refraining from any activities that could inadvertently spark a fire.

Residents are advised to stay informed through official channels and to report any signs of wildfire immediately to local emergency services. Proactive measures and community vigilance are essential to safeguarding the Florida Keys during this period of heightened fire risk.
