The City of Key West wants to welcome James Singelyn as Acting City Planner. Singelyn previously served as a Senior Planner for the City of Key West, stepping away in 2008 to care for his parents in his home state of Michigan.

Born in Detroit, Singelyn attended the University of Kansas on a swimming scholarship before earning his master’s degree in urban planning from Eastern Michigan University.  His career has taken him through Ypsilanti Township and the City of Birmingham in Michigan, Gallatin, Tennessee, and Key West, where he first joined the Planning Department in 2006.

During his earlier time with the city, Singelyn worked on projects of every scale, from new developments and redevelopments to the everyday needs of local homeowners. He is known for his collaborative spirit, creative problem-solving, and commitment to making the planning process open and approachable for everyone.

Key West Growth Management Division Director Patrick Wright notes that “the role of City Planner is vital to the daily operations of the City. While the Department and Division have done an excellent job maintaining momentum and serving our residents during this transitional period, it is essential to have a dedicated, senior-level professional in this position.”
