WEDNESDAY: In Special Judiciary Committee Session, Mucarsel-Powell Debates AdditionalGun Safety Legislation

WASHINGTON, DC – On Wednesday, September 4, U.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (FL-26), member of the Judiciary Committee and Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, will return from the district work period for a special Judiciary Committee session to debate additional gun violence prevention legislation. The Judiciary Committee will mark up several bills Mucarsel-Powell co-sponsored to address our nation’s gun violence epidemic: extreme risk protection orders and grants for states and tribes to implement their own “red flag” laws; preventing people convicted of  misdemeanor hate crimes from purchasing firearms; and a ban on high capacity magazines. Later in September, the Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on military-style assault weapons.

After her father died in a senseless act of gun violence, Mucarsel-Powell has been a leading advocate for gun safety reform. She has cosponsored several pieces of commonsense gun safety legislation, including H.R. 8 the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019 and H.R. 1112, the Enhanced Background Checks Act, which passed in February. She is continuing her calls for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to bring the Senate back from recess early for a vote on these life-saving pieces of legislation.

The markup will stream live here.
