VOTING RESTRICTIONS IN FLORIDA

Key West, FL – May 31, 2021 – The Lower Keys League of Women Voters is proud to announce a webinar featuring former Leon County Supervisor of Elections Ion V. Sancho, who will discuss the impacts of the recently passed restrictive elections bill SB 90.

The League believes the bill’s sweeping changes will make it harder for Floridians to cast their ballots, with a disproportionate impact on elderly voters, voters with disabilities, students and communities of color. The webinar will include a discussion of the final measures that made it into SB 90, the impact the bill will have on the typical voter and how the League can help mitigate impacts on various communities. There will also be a Q&A with Supervisor Sancho and Lower Keys League president Marge Holtz.

Ion V. Sancho served 28 years as Supervisor of Elections for Leon County Florida. Recognized for his expertise in voter education and voting technologies, he testified before Congress and other federal and state panels. An innovator, he introduced early voting to Florida in 1994, as well as pioneering Florida’s first integrated windows voter registration database. Mr. Sancho was appointed technical advisor to the 2000 Florida recount by the Florida Supreme Court.

Conducting independent tests in 2005 he uncovered a major security flaw in the Diebold Accu-vote 2000 voting machine, leading to its decertification in several states. The Election Center awarded the Freedom Award to his office in 2008 for creating a tracking system for vote by mail ballots. Mr. Sancho was featured in the HBO 2020 documentary on voting machine security “Killchain: The Cyber War on American Elections.” He serves on the Board for the non-partisan Electronic Verification Network and continues his efforts promoting accessible, secure elections.
