Volunteer Billboard Project Following Hurricane Irma Wins Top Advertising Award

May 10, 2018 (Austin, TX) – A public service billboard project to support Hurricane Irma relief efforts earned 22squared a top honor tonight at the Outdoor Advertising Association of America’s (OAAA) 2018 OBIE Awards this week. The agency behind the Irma Gives Back billboards won a Gold OBIE Award, honoring creative excellence in OOH advertising.

22squared’s Tampa office utilized the remains of billboards destroyed in the storm to craft new ones, directing viewers to IrmaGivesBack.org, where citizens could volunteer their time or donate money to Volunteer Florida’s relief efforts.

22squared worked with OOH media company Lamar Advertising to collect pieces for the project and displayed the finished creative on billboards in Fort Myers, an area hit hard by Hurricane Irma. Volunteers helped to execute the hand-crafted project in only five days.

“Pulling pieces from tattered billboard vinyl to bring new billboards to life deeply speaks to the efforts necessary to take a community that’s been ripped apart and bring it back together,” said Jayanta Jenkins, global chief creative director at Twitter and 2018 OBIE judge.

22squared is one of seven 2018 Gold OBIE Award winners, selected among 600 entries by a jury of advertising creative executives.
