VNA/HFK Encourages Monroe County to Make Their Wishes Known

April 16 is National Healthcare Decisions Day

Monroe County, Florida (April 11, 2017) — If a serious accident or illness should happen, is there someone you trust who can make healthcare decisions for you? What are your wishes? Who should know?

In recognition of National Healthcare Decisions Day on April 16, Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice of the Florida Keys (VNA/HFK) encourages members of the community to make their wishes known and “name the person who will speak for you when you can no longer speak for yourself.” VNA/HFK is offering complimentary copies of the advance care planning tool, Five Wishes®. For more information, please call Key West/Lower Keys: 305-294-8812, Middle to Upper Keys: 305-852-7887 or visit www.VNAHospiceKeys.org.

VNA/HFK along with other national, state, and community organizations are raising awareness of the importance of advance healthcare planning. This includes completing an advance directive (also known as a living will) and appointing a healthcare power of attorney (someone to make healthcare decisions for you if you are unable to speak for yourself). However, equally important are the conversations with family and loved ones about healthcare preferences and choices.

NHDD is a perfect opportunity to have these important conversations. Using an advance directive can be a gift to those around you. Family members and friends will not have to guess what you want if you cannot speak for yourself during a medical crisis. They won’t have to make those hard choices, because you have already made those choices for them.
