USDA info regarding pets traveling through Key West Airport
With the Oct. 3 announcement of an infestation of screwworm flies on Big Pine Key, an animal control checkpoint was set up in Key Largo to inspect for screwworms in animals leaving he Keys. This had led to inquiries regarding pets traveling through Key West International Airport. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has issued this response:
- At this time, the USDA is not requiring owners of pets or service animals traveling by plane or boat, in or out of the area, to possess a veterinary health inspection certificate due to the low risk nature of these movements.
- There are no restrictions for pets and service animals arriving into Key West International Airport.
- There are no restrictions for departing pets and service animals bound for domestic destinations.
- Departing pets and service animals connecting on international flights will be subject to the requirements of the destination country. This would include the USDA / APHIS 7001 form which would need to be submitted to the air carrier, along with any other requirements for the destination country. Specific information from USDA is available at https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/pet-travel. These procedures for international travel are standard practice and have not been modified due to this Screw Worm case.
