Upper Keys Rotary Names Jill Miranda Baker as President

Celebrates 50th Year as a Club
 
The Rotary Club of the Upper Keys installed Jill Miranda Baker as its president for the Rotary Year 2017-18 at the annual installation of club officers and board of directors event. The event also celebrated 50 years of service as a club, founded in 1967. Miranda Baker is the executive director of the Florida Keys History and Discovery Foundation, which operates the Keys History & Discovery Center. 
 
Rotary District 6990 Governor Alan Cohn installed the Board which includes officers, Miranda Baker, President-elect Terry Abel, Treasurer Judith Cooley, Secretary Joe Roth, Sergeant-at-Arms John Gallant, and Immediate Past-President Frank Derfler. Directors include Don Horton, Foundation Chair, Rob Stober, Membership Chair, Bette Brown, Marlo DeMoss, Peter Ihrig, Nicole Kraus, Chris Trentine, Bruce Williams, Mary Williams and Lesli Wojtecki.
 
The 50th Anniversary was commemorated with the throw-back menu from the first club meeting at Plantation Yacht Harbor Restaurant with conch chowder, tossed salad, prime rib, string beans and Key lime pie. Attendees received a Tervis tumbler touting the 50 years of service and a Service Above Self/50th Anniversary key chain. Past Presidents Joe Miklas and Tom McDonald honored each of the club’s past presidents and read a history of Upper Keys Rotary, written by Tom Fouts, the club’s first president. In attendance was 57-year Marathon Rotarian Borden Makepeace, who was involved with the Marathon Club when it chartered the Upper Keys club.
 
Upper Keys Rotary focuses its local efforts on raising money to support youth initiatives through athletic programs, funding scholarships and after school programs. Annual events include the Upper Keys Nautical Flea Market and Independence Day Fireworks at Founders Park.
