UPPER KEYS, FL – The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has temporarily halted a major construction project at Mile Marker 91 in the Upper Florida Keys due to increasing concerns over significant traffic disruptions and its impact on the community.
The project was initially designed to enhance roadway infrastructure and improve safety along the heavily traveled section of U.S. Highway 1. However, it has faced growing criticism from residents and local businesses, who have reported long delays, congestion, and difficulties accessing local establishments because of lane closures and detours.
FDOT officials announced the temporary suspension to reassess the project’s scope and develop strategies to mitigate traffic issues. “We recognize the challenges this project has created for the community, and we are using this pause to explore solutions that will ease the burden on residents and businesses,” said an FDOT spokesperson.
Local business owners expressed relief at the decision, noting that the construction had negatively impacted foot traffic and sales. “We’ve seen a noticeable drop in customers because people are avoiding the area,” said Maria Gonzalez, owner of a small café near the construction zone. “Hopefully, they’ll find a way to continue the work without harming local businesses.”
While the exact duration of the pause is unclear, FDOT has assured the public that updates will be provided as adjustments to the project plan are made. In the meantime, residents and commuters are encouraged to stay informed through official FDOT channels.
