UF College of Medicine students learn residencies at annual Match Day ceremony

WHAT: At the 2018 Match Day ceremony, fourth-year medical students at the University of Florida College of Medicine will learn and then share with their classmates which program or school they will attend to complete their residency training in the medical specialty of their choice.

Months ago, the students applied and interviewed for residency program positions. The National Resident Matching Program then used its algorithm to match students with resident programs, taking into account the institutions’ and students’ top choices. UF students who will learn their matches on Friday include:

Tenisha Wilson, the first African-American woman to graduate from the UF College of Medicine M.D.-Ph.D. Training Program. Wilson looks to heroes such as her mother, who moved to Miami from Jamaica to further her children’s education, and Shireen Madani Sims, M.D., who inspired her to seek a residency in obstetrics and gynecology. Wilson aims to conduct clinical translational research on pregnant women with autoimmune diseases.

De-Vaughn Williams has volunteered with the UF Mobile Outreach Clinic since his first undergraduate semester at UF. He said this has given him insight into something his classroom education hinted at — disparities in access to health care. Next year, he aims to become a resident in internal medicine. Williams hopes to have a career in academic medicine as well as continue his volunteer work caring for underserved populations.
