Two Honored for 30 Years of Service

Fire Chief Michael Davila this week honored two members of the Key West Fire Department for 30 years of distinguished service during this week’s City Commission meeting.

Mark Sellers joined the Department in February of 1987. He was promoted to Driver/Engineer in 1996, Captain in 2004, and his current position of Shift Commander in 2011.

During his tenure, Sellers has served the fire department in several capacities. He is a HAZMAT Tech and HAZMAT team member, a Fire Inspector, a Fire Instructor, and is a member of the Dive Team, and the USAR team. He also serves as one of the main instructors for the Key West High School Fire Academy.

“He provides great leadership to the Blue Watch as the Shift Commander of all resources for 24 hour shifts,” said Chief Davila. “He is responsible for the exceptional service that is provided on his watch and a big reason we have attained the ISO rating of Class 1. Mark has for many years represented the Key West Fire Department with honor, commitment, and leadership.”

Robert Malone joined the Department in 1987 and was promoted to Driver/Engineer in 2004. In 2008 he was promoted to Captain.

During his 30 years of service, Malone has served as one of the first members of both the HAZMAT and USAR Teams. He is a State of Florida certified Fire Inspector, and EMT.

“Captain Malone has a special ability maintaining and repairing our equipment and vehicles,” said Chief Davila. “He is a great leader, followed by both rookies and veterans by providing an example of what the Key West Fire Department stands for: serving and protecting the citizens and guests of our island. He worked his whole career to improve the quality of service our department provides.”

Chief Davila noted that Captain Malone is retiring from the Key West Fire Department after 30 years of service at the end of February.

“He is a beloved and respected member of our team and will be greatly missed by everyone,” he said.
