During a recent awards ceremony hosted by the Grand Tree Double Tree Resort, Key West Police Chief Sean Brandenburg presented Sgt. Cynthia Williams and Officer Michael Caldwell Officer with the Lifesaving Award.

On March 29th, Officer Caldwell was off duty driving a marked Key West Police patrol vehicle when he was flagged down by a woman near the Key Haven Boat ramp regarding a vehicle crash.

As Officer Caldwell approached the driver’s side window, the driver placed the vehicle in reverse and attempted to drive away. Officer Caldwell was able to reach in and put the car in park and guide the clearly intoxicated man from the car.

The man collapsed and Officer Caldwell administered a dose of Narcan. Sergeant Williams, who was also off-duty, arrived on-scene. The male’s overdose symptoms had not improved, and he was still exhibiting physical signs of an overdose. Sergeant Williams administered a second dose of agency issued Narcan.

It was learned the male had ingested cocaine just prior to exhibiting signs of an overdose.

“If it were not for the quick actions of Officer Caldwell,” said Chief Brandenburg, “ the subject could have caused further injury to himself or another. The quick actions of both officers in administering Narcan resulted in immediate life-saving measures.”
