Two charged with burglary, battery

A man and a woman were arrested in Key Largo Saturday night after they forced their way into an apartment and battered the occupants over a $42 debt.

39 year old Renee Szczudlik and 34 year old Adam Halenza knocked on the door of the Hammock Trail apartment just before 8 p.m. When the 68 year old victim answered the door, they forced their way inside and pushed the victim to the floor. The victim recognized the suspects and knew his 27 year old godson owed them $42. He went into his room to get the money for them as they began knocking on his godson’s bedroom door.

His godson opened the bedroom door and Szczudlik grabbed him by the hair, dragging him out of bed. Halenza then joined in, sitting on him, punching him and shoving his face into a closet door. The 68 year old victim and his wife attempted to defend their godson. The two suspects finally grabbed the money from the 68 year old victim and left the house.

Deputy Gil Gonzalez responded to the Hammock Trail apartment. He interviewed all the victims and observed the numerous minor injuries they all sustained in the attack.

The godson was able to give the deputy the address where the two suspects live on Sonny Road in Islamorada. Deputie went there and spoke to the suspects and they were both placed under arrest.

Both suspects were charged with burglary to an occupied dwelling with battery on the occupant. Halenza was additionally charged with battery on a person over 65 years of age and aggravated battery. Szczudlik was additionally charged with two counts of battery and with criminal mischief after she damaged the inside of Deputy Titus Hodges’ patrol car by kicking the camera in the back seat.
