Key West High School students have a unique opportunity to learn about the field of television production, thanks to the TV Pro class taught by Ed Smith.

Students who have an interest in computers and film projects find this class quite useful as it gives them the experience of making films with actual TV cameras. Then some of the movies they film are entered in state competitions, which gives students the ability to win awards and get exposure.

The class is mainly about gaining the skills necessary to be able to work in a digital media environment. Smith explains the advanced technology the class uses to work on the projects as “beyond what you would imagine. This class could help you develop the necessary tool box needed for any industry that you’re planning to go to in the future.”

Smith says these skills would be especially useful for students who plan on going into an industry that would require a digital media guru. “It could give you a boost on life more than what you would think,” he says. “By the end of the course, [students] learn how to do Photoshop, edit videos, make brochures, and do many more [interesting projects].” In addition, an average video editor makes a lucrative wage, not to mention that the skills learned in TV Pro could even help entrepreneurs start their own business.

He adds that top students from his class have used their experience to further their success: “[Former] student TJ Nitti went to NYU film school, which is one of the best in the world,” Smith says, proving how the TV Pro class is a huge opportunity for students to push their lives and goals further.
