Transit Operator’s Appreciation Month

In recognition of the vital role that out transit operators play in the community, Key West Mayor Teri Johnston this week proclaimed March as Transit Operator Appreciation Month.

Transit Director Rod Delostrinos and Driver of the Year Alex Perez accepted the recognition.

On March 18th, 1662 the first day of scheduled transit bus service took place in Paris: the Five-Penny Coaches. Since then public transit has become a vital service all over the world. In 2018, American public transit agencies provided more than 10.4 billion trips on public transportation.

Key West Transit provided service for more than 619,000 passengers in 2018.

“For hours on end,” reads the proclamation, “our transit operators provide an essential service that strengthens our community and economy by safely and expertly delivering people to their destination by maneuvering an extra-large vehicle through tedious unpredictable traffic and narrow thoroughfares in all weather conditions.”

“Transit drivers don’t have an easy job; they just make it look that way,” Said Mayor Johnston.
