Goals and aspirations are what fuel the flame of knowledge and keep it burning like a wildfire. This sense of hope for a fortunate future is what can ignite the passion and yearning for more.

An exemplary student who shows this diligence in her school work is Christina Tong, an 11th grader at Key West High School (KWHS). She was selected as the 2019 Sunshine State Scholar because of her exceptional grades and academic record.

A fundamental key to success is a plan for the future, and in a few words, Tong briefly describes her dreams for the future: “I want to attend a top school, like an Ivy League or something of similar ranking.” She continues, “After college, I’d like to become a book editor and/or an engineer. Eventually, I want to write YA (young adult) novels.”

Tong’s love for writing and literature is clearly apparent when looking over her past accomplishments. She has written a myriad of articles, short stories and award winning poetry, which have been published.

She also attributes other reasons to her academic achievements. Tong remarks, “I’ve mostly kept my grades up and aimed for classes that give higher weighted GPAs, like AP and DE classes. I’ve taken a lot of classes, including a few over summer.”

Along with these reasons, Tongs shares some advice that could help others to keep their grades up: “Be organized and procrastinate less. Also, try to cut out distractions, even if it’s for a small amount of time.”

“I focus on school because it’s something I consider myself to be good at, as opposed to something like dance,” Tong adds.

This young woman has not only found what she is good at and is successful with, but she also has found her passion: writing. These two things are key elements that lead to happiness and a solid future.
