Tickets for the 24-Hour Theater Project On Sale Now at The Studios’ Box Office

Earlier this month, The Studios of Key West sent out a challenge to the island’s creative folk: to come together at the end of the month to write, rehearse, and create backdrops for four brand-new ten minute plays…in only 24 hours. The dramatic result, One Night Stand, unfolds before a live audience on June 30, with shows at 7pm and 9pm at The Studios. Tickets are $30/$25 mbrs, and are on sale now.

“I’ve stockpiled espresso and No-Doz to help me deliver a script by sunrise,” said actor, entertainer, and radio personality Landon Bradbary, one of the writers for this year’s One Night Stand.  “I can’t tell you what I’m going to come up with, but I can promise it’ll be…uhhh…something!”

The night before the show, creative teams are formed and common elements are revealed: a secret line and prop, which must be worked into each brand new script. But that’s where the similarities between the new plays end.

“You really have no idea what you’re going to get till the curtain goes up,” said Elena Devers, deputy director. “We’ve had comedies, musicals and tragedies, and plays that take place everywhere from the planet Mars to the set of Wheel of Fortune.”

Working from headshots of actors they’ve pulled at random, playwrights spend the whole night before the performance creating a ten-minute play. Four freshly penned scripts are delivered to The Studios’ office by dawn the next morning.

On Saturday morning, the actors, directors, artists, stagehands and volunteers pick up the creative baton. They’ll spend the day memorizing lines, rehearsing plays, creating sets, and procuring props and costumes from all corners of the island. The results are surprising, creative, and often hilarious.

“Who can forget the zombie soap opera from the first year, or the play that took place entirely in the hangar of an airplane custom-built by artist Rick Worth?” continued Devers. “And one year, Mike Mongo did such a spot-on impression of a inflatable wacky waving tube man, a local car dealership tried to hire him.”

When the curtain rises, actors will have to rely on imagination, memory, coffee, and in a pinch, improvisational skills to deliver their performances.

Audiences have two chances to see the results on Saturday June 30, with shows at 7pm and 9pm.

Tickets for the June 30 performance are $25 for Studios’ members and $30 for non-members. A Queen (or King) of One Night Stand will be selected at random from the 9pm audience and will receive a fabulous door prize worth $300, as well as international fame for life.
