Through with Chew Week

Key West Mayor Craig Cates and Vice Mayor Clayton Lopez have proclaimed the week of Feb 18th through the 24th as Through with Chew Week in conjunction with the Florida Department of Health’s Bureau of Tobacco Free Florida.

Smokeless tobacco like chew and dip are proven to cause cancer of the mouth, esophagus and pancreas as well as leading to nicotine addiction. But, although the Health Department has found that cigarette smoking has decreased, the use of smokeless tobacco has not declined as drastically.

Emily Mutschler, President of Tobacco Free Florida Keys, told the commission that the use of smokeless tobacco among young adults is particularly insidious. She directed them to www.tobaccofreeflorida.com for resources to help people quit – to be Through with Chew.
