The Studios of Key West opens its galleries to the public

On Thursday, Feb. 2, from 6-8pm, The Studios of Key West opens its galleries to the public for its lively First Thursdays evening. Four unique exhibitions fill the galleries, including work by Key West watercolor artist Sean Callahan and Emmy award-winning writer Garin Wolf, porcelain figures by Cathy Rose, a selection of photographs by Charles Pearson and Timothy Roeder, plus a preview of the works to be included in this year’s Anne McKee Fine Art Auction (Feb. 10).

“Fish Outta Water” is the title of a forthcoming book featuring Sean Callahan’s watercolors and writer Garin Wolf’s story: a tale of a decades old murder mystery set in the Southernmost City. The book’s characters are vibrantly rendered in watercolor by Callahan, with all twenty three paintings seen together for the first time in the Sanger Gallery aside Wolf’s intriguing mystery.

“Lost and Found,” by Cathy Rose, includes porcelain figurines that are intricate and imbued with character. Rose has built an impressive and sought-after body of work, manipulating her delicate material into faces and bodies that are adorned with found material.

The Feb 2. First Thursdays event is also an opportunity for the public to preview the works included in the Anne McKee Artists Fund fine art auction. Over 50 Florida Keys artists, ranging from renowned masters to emerging talents, have contributed artwork to be auctioned Feb. 10th at The Studios.

“Angels – Preview Exhibition,” photographs by Charles Pearson and Timothy Roeder, will be on view in the Zabar project gallery. For this body of work, Pearson and Roeder took inspiration from “The First Scientific Collection,” an assemblage of medical curiosities commissioned by Peter the Great, the Russian Czar who ruled from 1672-1725. The artists invite the viewer to explore not just the image, but also the surface of the photograph, which has been varnished, sanded, painted, stained, and sewn.

Visitors should also plan to stop by Books & Books at The Studios for a glass of champagne and a piece of cake to celebrate the bookstore’s first birthday. Help usher in a new year of literary service to the community!

The Studios of Key West is located at 533 Eaton Street. Details on all their classes, exhibitions and events can be found at www.tskw.org.

“Fish Outta Water” was made possible in part with a grant from the Anne McKee Artists Fund.
