Teen arrested after shooting gun at occupied vehicle

A 16-year-old Homestead male was arrested Sunday after shooting into an occupied car at Key Largo Community Park.

There were no serious injuries reported.

Anton Lavar Clayton was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, robbery with a firearm, discharging a firearm in public, discharging a firearm from a vehicle, unlawful possession of a firearm, theft and criminal mischief.

A litany of Deputies and Detectives descended on the park at approximately 5 p.m. They arrived to find a car with several bullet holes in it. The ensuing investigation by the Sheriff’s Office found the victim’s car and the suspect car had been parked next to each other at the park so the occupants of both could perform a drug deal over approximately 3.5 grams of marijuana.

Clayton was the passenger in the suspect car, a Hyundai. Clayton got out, reached into the victim’s car and snatched the victim’s cell phone. The victim reporting hearing several gunshots. The Hyundai drove away. The victim followed in order to get a plate number and stated he saw the suspect, Clayton, shoot a gun in his direction. The victim was able to provide a description of the Hyundai.

The Hyundai was stopped near Mile Marker 108 and Clayton as well as the driver, also 16, were taken into custody. The driver was not charged as of Monday.

Several witnesses as well as the victim identified Clayton as the shooter.

Clayton admitted to having a .45-caliber handgun, taking the victim’s cell phone, shooting the firearm several times at the victim’s car at the park and later throwing the firearm into the water near Laguna Avenue.

The Department of Juvenile Justice was notified of the charges against Clayton.

More charges/arrests may be pending.
