STAY HOME WITH FRINGE FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Looking for a little holiday spirit? Fringe Theater Key West kicks off the 2020-21 performance season with Fringe for the Holidays. This collection of holiday stories is presented online, on demand, and without charge throughout the month of December at www.fringetheater.org.

“We’re excited to offer something to our community that everyone can safely access and enjoy,” explains Janet Bengel, Fringe’s Board President. “We wanted to do something unique for our community since it has been such a difficult 2020. Our free play readings in the past have been wildly popular. To reach as many people as safely as possible, we decided to offer a free holiday reading online and invite people to stay home with Fringe for the Holidays.”

Fringe for the Holidays draws from a wide range of stories including popular literary classics, children’s books, and contemporary tales. The program even includes a surprise or two, like an obscure piece that ran in an African American writer’s journal more than a hundred years ago and a modern yarn that is truly out of this world.  “Our goal was to present a broad range of stories and holiday experiences,” says Rebecca Tomlinson, Fringe’s Managing Artistic Director. “We hope there will be something for everyone in our Fringe for the Holidays program.”

Act I features The Little Match Girl by Hans Christian Andersen read by Vanessa McCaffrey and Su Nubia, Oskar & the Eight Blessings by Simon and Simon read by Glenda Donovan and Mathias Maloff, A Child’s Christmas in Wales by Dylan Thomas read by Peyton Evans, We Live in a Tree One Month a Year by Reina Hardy read by Diane May and Sam Laskey, Fannie Mae’s Christmas by Katherine Davis Tillman read by Wilhelmina Lopez Martin, and The Carpenter’s Gift by David Rubel read by Donna Stabile and accompanied by guitarist Gary Rivenson.

Act II includes A Christmas Memory by Truman Capote read by Don Bearden, Un Poquito De Tu Amor by Sandra Cisneros read by Francesca Alejandra and Daniel Bochlas, Gift of the Magi by O. Henry read by Melody Moore and Bob Bowersox, A Long Day for Morgenstern by Mike Indgin read by Mathias Maloff and Glenda Donovan, and Cajun Night Before Christmas read by Richard Quint.

The production was videoed at Fringe’s new home, the Key West Armory. “We are going to be presenting several of our shows online this season,” adds Tomlinson, “so this holiday special gave us a chance to figure out how to do that. We are grateful that our Fringe crew has a passion for filmmaking in addition to theater. And we’re excited to reach our audience – no matter where they are for the holidays.”

Fringe for the Holidays runs online only. It is available through December on Fringe’s website, www.fringetheater.org. Use HOLIDAYS for the password. If patrons would like to support the production, they are invited to give back through the Pay What You Wish ticket link.
