Special Olympics Commended
Mayor Teri Johnston and the Key West City Commission commended the Monroe County Special Olympics Bowling Team and the Flag Football Team for their amazing accomplishments this season.
The Key West Conchs Bowling Team competed at the Boardwalk Bowl for the State Championship in Orlando in September. Three of the six Conch Republic Bowlers returned home with gold medals. Charleslyn Martin won first place in singles, while Jude Marceau and John Golden won first place in doubles.
Other winners include Ray Moreno who finished second place to win silver, William Rainer who finished fourth place and Christian Rucker who finished in sixth place.
A special thank you goes to Coach Pat Hart, American Legion Post 28 for sponsoring the team this season and the Key West Police Department for their donation which allowed the team to celebrate at Dave and Busters on the last night of the games.
The Key West Conchs Flag Football Team competed at the Florida State Fall Classic for the State Championship in Orlando in November. They played a two-game bracket, bringing home the gold, winning the final game 20-0.
“It is most fitting we recognize and congratulate these outstanding student athletes: Nelson Alejandrez, Jennifer Averette, Dustin Eamilio, Vincent Janecka, Jude Marceau, Benny Valdez and Jennifer Wasserman,” reads the commendation.
“A special thank you goes to Coaches Randy Acevedo and Angel Torres for their work and dedication and to the Sunset Rotary for their support of the Key West Conchs Flag Football Team.”
Special Olympics Florida – Monroe County is a year-round sports and training program, offering opportunities in sports, health, and leadership to persons with and without disabilities ages eight and above, at no cost to them or their caregivers.
