Sheriff’s Office and partners conduct large Boot Key operation

 

On Thursday, the Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team and Aviation Division was led by Middle Keys Sgt. Joel Slough who coordinated a large scale operation on Boot Key in Marathon alongside our key partners: U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Border Patrol, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Marathon Fire Rescue.

 

The island is only accessible by boat or by helicopter. The objective of the operation was to identify people living on the island, identify derelict vessels and to make law enforcement’s presence known on the island.

Middle Keys Sgt. and SWAT Team Leader Joel Slough coordinates an air and sea operation Thursday with members of the Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team, the Sheriff’s Office Aviation Division, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Border Patrol, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Marathon Fire Rescue who were all tasked with a large scale check of Boot Key in Marathon. The objective was to identify people living on the island, identify derelict vessels and to make law enforcement’s presence known. The operation was a success.

 

There were no arrests made or major incidents reported.

 

Multiple derelict vessels were found, which will be addressed by the FWC.

 

Law enforcement visits Boot Key semi-regularly to ensure no criminal activity is occurring there and to ensure the safety of Monroe County residents.
