Sheriff’s bomb squad responds to suspicious package

The Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad responded to reports of a suspicious package today underneath the movie theater at Tavernier Towne Shopping Center.

Someone called the Sheriff’s Office just before 2 p.m. to report seeing the suspicious item. When deputies arrived, they found what looked like a bunch of old cell phones taped together. Not knowing exactly what the item was, they called for the Bomb Squad to respond just in case.

Out of an abundance of caution, the movie theater was evacuated. Mariner’s Hospital, located next door, was notified. The Sheriff’s Office recommended the hospital stop using the entrance to the building nearest to the theater until the situation could be resolved.

The Bomb Squad responded and determined the device was not explosive in nature and posed no danger to the public. The area was cleared and declared safe at 5:40 p.m.

Detectives will be investigating to determine the origins of the package.
