SEIU Endorses Joe Garcia for Congress

Miami, FL—Today, the campaign of former Congressman Joe Garcia picked up major momentum with the endorsement of Service Employees International Union (SEIU)—one of the country’s biggest labor groups. This most recent endorsement comes amid the campaign’s newly launched Unity Tour, in which Joe Garcia travels the district to join with local leaders and community members in order to send him back to Congress to stand up for the people of South Florida.

“Joe has the support of working families because working families know they can count on Joe,” said Monica Russo, President of SEIU Florida. “Joe has been in the trenches fighting alongside South Florida workers for years, advocating for higher wages, immigrant rights, affordable healthcare, women’s right to choose, renewable energy, and more! He is not an average Joe, he is a champion for the working class.”

The endorsements of SEIU adds to Garcia’s strong support from working families. Garcia has also been endorsed by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, International Electrical Workers Union (IEWU) and United Food & Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW). Garcia is expected to gain additional community support as he meets with leaders throughout the district during his Unity Tour.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by the men and women who serve and care for this community,” said Congressman Joe Garcia, candidate for Florida’s 26th Congressional District. “I’m proud to work with labor groups like SEIU to make life better for Florida families. Unlike Carlos Curbelo who has voted against equal pay and refuses to support a higher minimum wage, I pledge to fight for equal pay, a $15 minimum wage and better labor protections for all Americans.”

Garcia has a long record of fighting for working families. Earlier this year, he tried living off $17 a day during a minimum wage challenge meant to bring attention to the hardship faced by many Floridians. In Congress, Garcia co-sponsored minimum wage legislation and continues to advocate for a $15 minimum wage today. Garcia also marched alongside South Florida airport workers in order to call for an end to unfair labor practices.
