See Something, Say Something

How students are using their voices to inspire a necessary change

“Hear nothing, see nothing, say nothing.” It’s a common value taught to many, a way of steering clear of controversy and dilemma. This mindset, originally intended for good, was quick to make its way into bad company. A generation of bystanders were birthed. Regardless of what was happening in the world, the atmosphere seemed oddly unspoken.

However, following events like the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Shooting, in Parkland, Florida, Key West High School students are answering the call for a change that needs to happen. These students are using their voices to change the stigma behind speaking up for they believe in.

Several students had the idea to team up with administration to organize an event dedicated to showing support for MSD High School. All of Key West High came together to send supplies to Parkland, as well as to urge the school to make the school system safer and more aware of all its students’ feelings and fears. Following this event was a nationwide walkout, in which the students opened their voices and their hearts for all to hear. The following week, the vast majority of Key West High School walked in the “March For Our Lives” protest, which was also organized by students, where they urged State and National legislation to make a change.

Key West High School is vastly diverse, with students hailing from many different backgrounds. However, no difference is stopping these students from coming together as one. The high school has a quote that is inscribed into every student from the moment they walk into school. “See something, say something.” It’s a quote meant to push students to speak up when they see something that may bother them or that may inspire them. The students of Key West High are proving themselves to be one step above that. Yesterday, they saw something, and said something. Today, tomorrow, and for the rest of their lives, they are doing something.
