Savor the Sweet Sounds of the South Florida Symphony 2016

Summer Chamber Music Concert Series

Maestra Sebrina Alfonso welcomes Invoke String Quartet and Excelsa Quartet as guest artist headliners for the 2016 Summer Chamber Music Concert Series of the South Florida Symphony in Fort Lauderdale and The Keys. These two much talked about innovative groups promise to bring sweet summer sounds to South Florida.

Invoke String Quartet, a musical item since 2013, includes Nick Montopoli (violin and banjo), Zach Matteson (violin), Karl Mirze (viola and mandolin), and Geoff Manyin (cello). The quartet was selected as Artists in Residence at Strathmore, Emerging Young Artist Quartet at Interlochen, and Fellowship String Quartet at Wintergreen Performing Arts. Invoke encompasses traditions from across America, including bluegrass, Appalachian fiddle tunes, jazz, and minimalism, weaving all together into truly unique contemporary string quartet repertoire written by and for the group. The quartet has shared the stage with acclaimed American chamber groups and has performed and recorded numerous world premiere works. Capital Gazette describes Invoke as: “Versatile and musically adventurous, way more than classical…”. “If the goal was to make music relevant, it couldn’t have proven the point any more clearly” raves Columbia Free Times.

Excelsa Quartet fashioned its name from “Picca excels”, a distinct species of Northern European spruce trees used to make the top panel of fine musical instruments.   Formed in January 2009 at the New England Conservatory of Music (Boston, Massachusetts), Excelsa now is the Graduate Fellowship String Quartet at the University of Maryland (College Park, MD). The quartet was the First Prize winner of “The Provincie Limburg Prijs” along with the “EMCY Artprize” at the Charles Hennen 26th International Chamber Music Competition for Strings, The Netherlands. Studies and collaboration include: acclaimed quartets in Germany, United Kingdom, Israel, Canada, California, New York, Washington, D.C., and Miami; world renowned conductor Benjamin Zander; and composers John Heiss and Wolfgang Rihm. The Washington Post praises Excelsa as “Fresh and youthful … projected power and excitement.” Excelsa members Valentina Shohdy (viola), Kacy Clopton (cello), and Audrey Wright (violin) will perform in the Chamber Series.
