Sanctuary names Benson as Volunteer of the Year

For serving as a knowledgeable and devoted ambassador, Will Benson, of Sugarloaf Key, Florida, has been named Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Volunteer of the Year. The honor places him in contention for National Volunteer of the Year awarded by the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, the National Marine Sanctuary System’s nonprofit partner.

Benson, owner of World Angling, serves on the Sanctuary Advisory Council, chairing the Recreational-Charter Fishing Working Group that drafted the framework for the Blue Star Fishing Guides program due to launch in May. Benson ensures communication between his constituency and the Advisory Council to restore and nurture the relationship between anglers and resource managers.

Benson received the local award at the April meeting of the Sanctuary Advisory Council meeting. In June, he will be a panelist during the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation’s Capitol Hill Ocean Week, the nation’s premier ocean policy conference.
