Residents urged to not call 911 with questions regarding mini season, visit www.monroecountyem.com/covid19 for the most updated information

911 is intended for live emergencies only.

Often, residents and visitors use 911 with non-emergency questions, such as the status of lobster mini season given COVID-19. We also often receive 911 calls for motor vehicle crash updates.

We also get many calls the Communications Division non-emergency line with similar questions, which is not that line’s intended purpose.

Lately, we have been getting a litany of 911 calls regarding the status of lobster mini season.

Residents are urged to follow the protective measures of Monroe County government at www.monroecountyem.com/covid19 or on Facebook at www.fb.com/MonroeCountyBOCC.

The Sheriff’s Office, nor Monroe County officials, cannot decide to stop mini season, only officials in Tallahassee can make that decision. Questions of this nature into 911 only tie up Communications Specialists who are often very busy with life threatening live 911 calls.

Monroe County Mayor Heather Carruthers called an emergency virtual special meeting for tomorrow, Tuesday, July 21 at 9 a.m. via Zoom to discuss the continuing spike in cases of COVID-19, asking FWC to cancel mini-season, and other protective measures regarding boat ramps and the County’s vacation rental plan. For information on how to join tomorrow, visit www.monroecounty-fl.gov/meetings.
