Rescue Tails / Jordyn

The Florida Keys SPCA services 2,000 animals annually between our Key West and Marathon Campuses. Last year, 783 of those were dogs. We documented more than 90 different breed and breed mixes from American Blue Heelers to Xoloitzcuintli (a Mexican hairless Chihuahua). If you’re looking for a certain type or breed of dog, with a little bit of patience, you can find the dog you’re seeking in a shelter.

Two years ago, Mr. Wells met with our staff at our Marathon Campus. He left his business card with a note that indicated he was looking for a young, blonde Labrador Retriever or Labradoodle (mix of a Lab and Poodle) knowing that a young, blonde Lab or Labradoodle entering the shelter may just take time.

In early June of 2018, a 10-month-old Lab named Jordyn was surrendered to our Marathon Campus when his owners could no longer care for him. The exuberant young dog was as handsome as he was sweet. And blonde. Our staff remembered Mr. Wells, found his card and gave him a call, not knowing if, after two years, he’d still be looking for a dog, or if he had already adopted another dog.

Mr. Wells was ecstatic to get the call. Determined to rescue a dog, and not purchase one from a breeder, he had yet to adopt a dog like Jordyn. However, Mr. Wells had left Monroe County shortly before Hurricane Irma and was 220 miles away. He quickly downloaded our adoption application and submitted it. Photos of his new home and pictures of Jordyn were exchanged. Just a few short days later, Mr. Wells was on his way back to the Keys to pick up his new companion, and he couldn’t have been more excited.

Jordyn and Mr. Wells bonded instantly. The two of them were off to a new life together where Jordyn has a sister, plays in the yard and stays by his new dad all the time. If you are considering bringing a new animal into your home, the Florida Keys SPCA should be the first place you look. With more than 2,000 animals serviced each year, we’re sure to have the right family member for you.
