RESCUE TAILS: AN FKSPCA SUCCESS STORY

“CHICO”

BY TAMMY FOX-ROYER
Executive Director Florida Keys SPCA

Last week, I told you about seven abandoned puppies — and the seven wonderful families who adopted them. This week, I have a story about the other end of the age spectrum.

When a local family recently left the Keys, they surrendered their 16-year old Pomeranian, Chico, to us. An older dog of this breed tends to be quite loving and easy to manage. Although my heart goes out to every animal that comes into the shelter, I was especially saddened see this very family-oriented dog living out his final days in the shelter without a home of his own.

Fortunately, Nancy came along. She was looking for a senior dog to live with her and her cat, Fluffernutter, at their home in Key West. Chico fit right in. Nancy and Chico visited the pet store to buy special dog food and soft treats that an older Pomeranian loves — and the three of them couldn’t be happier.

Chico and Nancy were part of our special 6/60 Program — anyone over the age of 60 can adopt a pet over the age of 6 — absolutely free! Age is no deterrent to creating a loving family!

And to help us celebrate “Nationwide Clear the Shelter Day,” we are waiving ALL adoption fees on Saturday August 19 at both our Key West and Marathon campuses. We are in the middle of Hurricane season and in the event of a major storm, we would have to evacuate ALL of our animals into foster homes until it is safe for them to return to the shelter. This event could help us put a large number of animals into homes which will tremendously help our need during this tropical storm season.  Stop by our shelters to meet some amazing animals and hopefully bring one into your home!
