Rescue Tails / A Sisterly Pair
By Cathy Baier
Few things are sadder than animals losing their lifelong home because their person passed away. This was the situation that senior sisters Ebony and Sophia found themselves in. The girls were showing some wear and tear from their thirteen years of life on earth. Ebony, especially, had skin issues with lots of hair loss and was showing signs of arthritis. Her vision was limited, especially in low light. We observed her failing to see stairs in front of her or bumping into things at night. It appeared that Sister Sophia was often her guide. But what was the most striking feature of both girls was the little “tusks” protruding from the sides of their mouths! While these errant teeth were endearing in an odd way, they were part of more severe and painful dental disease.
The girls were obviously bonded and dependent on each other for support and security. Given their age and history, it was decided they would only be rehomed together. Before we made them available for adoption though, they needed medical care to help them be more comfortable. Both dogs were put on a treatment plan for their skin, and dentals were performed. As time passed, the transformation in these two little dogs was powerful to see as they gained relief from irritated, itchy skin and painful, infected teeth. They became joyful, more engaged with others, and so much happier overall.
We began taking applications for them. Most people were interested in one or the other, not both. Others had some environmental risks for Ebony with her visual limitations, such as pools, canals, and stilt homes with stairs. But often good things come to those who wait. That’s exactly what happened for Sophie and Ebony. When Gerri met them and saw their interaction together, she was committed to keeping them together.
The updates we’ve gotten from Gerri have included the words, “so much joy,” “makes me laugh all the time,” “follow me everywhere,” and “so glad I did this!” That’s exactly the kind of update we love hearing. It assures us that Ebony and Sophia and Gerri are now a family unit that is bringing happiness to all of them!
