Rescue Tail / “Everyone needs a cat”
We all go through tough times and for many of us, having our beloved furry companion by our side can help ease our troubles. It’s been scientifically proven that owning a cat (or a dog) can be good for your overall health. Cats in particular lower your stress level—possibly since they don’t require as much effort as dogs—and lower the amount of anxiety in your life. Petting a cat has a positive calming effect. The role of “therapy cat” is exactly the role that George was meant to play.
Found as a stray, trapped actually, George was a handsome and affectionate tabby cat. Breaking the traditional stereotype of being independent, George actively reached out to humans for companionship and adored being held. For any animal that comes into our shelter, we always wait for a potential owner before placing any stray pet for adoption. For as friendly and social as George was, our staff and volunteers were surprised as the days passed and nobody came looking for George.
Now placed for adoption in our big, beautiful “Catio” at our Marathon Campus, George was far less interested in socializing with his feline counterparts than he was interacting with new visitors. Once he saw a human approaching George was quick to turn on the charm. He would stretch his arms up and look visitors right in the eye silently saying “Pick me! Pick me!” Somehow, despite his best advances, it would be three months before George found his perfect match.
Recovering from a serious illness and trapped inside most days, George’s new mom was looking for companionship. Someone to sit with her when she felt ill, cuddle with her when she was tired and help lift her spirits when she needed it. Seated in a chair in the Catio George patiently waited for the other cats to greet her and move along to something more interesting. When the time was right, out came the charm. George jumped in her lap and purred as hard as he possibly could. It was working, he could tell. Time to seal the deal! George closed his eyes with each touch of her hand, drooled and promptly went to sleep in the arms of his new mom. George chose her, and she chose George. Now the two of them are forever companions and George has the best family he could ever dream of.
There are many wonderful reasons to bring a cat into your home and heart. Having surpassed the dog as the most popular household pet, it is estimated that there are 93.6 million domestic cats in households throughout the United States. Yet, with all their popularity there are still 200 homeless adult cats and kittens currently waiting for their families at our Key West and Marathon Campuses. If you’re thinking of adding a cat or kitten to your family be sure to check our shelters first. We have a variety of ages, sizes, colors, temperaments and breeds waiting patiently to be matched with their perfect humans.
