NEW SLIP DOCKS COMING TO KEY WEST COMMUNITY SAILING CENTER

Leaders of the Key West Community Sailing Center (KWCSC) announced they have met their fundraising goal, and the slip docks demolished by Hurricane Irma can now be replaced.

“Thank you friends of the Sailing Center for donating over $50,000 to meet the challenge grant from the Edward B. & Joan T. Knight Foundation,” said Jane Carper, commodore of KWCSC.  “We have many smiling faces as we look toward a bright future of teaching sailing, social outings, and fun at this special community place.”

The Knight Foundation issued the challenge in April, offering to give $50,000 to the Center if a matching amount was raised.  KWCSC met the challenge at the end of July, thanks in part to a $10,000 grant from the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys.  Additional contributions came from over 68 individual donors and businesses.

It is anticipated that the new slip docks will be completed by the end of this year, barring unforeseen problems.

Key West Community Sailing Center offers a range of activities including:

  • Kids summer camp serving more than 100 youth ages six to 17;
  • After-school youth sailing program in the fall and spring;
  • Special boating trips for developmentally disabled folks, through a partnership with the Monroe Association for Remarkable Citizens (MARC);
  • Free sailing classes for women and girls, men and boys; and
  • Competitive racing teams for adults and youth

The new stable dockage will ensure a safe place for boats and add to the sustainability of the sailing center.  KWCSC is a 501c3 nonprofit and is committed to educational programming for all ages interested in gaining the confidence, teamwork and fun that comes with sailing.
