Reckless driver charged after drugs, alcohol found in truck

A Key Largo man went to jail after a deputy spotted him driving recklessly and pulled him over. Drugs and alcohol were found inside the truck he was driving. He also had an active warrant and a suspended driver’s license.

Deputy Dyllon Hansen was at the 106 mile marker of highway U.S. One at 4:30 p.m. Saturday when he saw a black colored pickup truck traveling at a high rate of speed on a dirt road between the highway and Largo Road. The truck then turned onto the highway, still speeding at approximately 60 miles per hour in a 45 mile per hour zone. As the deputy caught up with the truck, driver 39 year old Steven Bennett took a sharp turn onto Paradise Drive and stopped at the intersection of Coral Way and South Blackwater Lane.

As Deputy Hansen approached the truck, he saw Bennett take a pair of black gloves off and throw them onto the dash of the truck. The deputy could smell marijuana as he approached the truck. When he asked Bennett for his driver’s license, Bennett could not produce one.

Bennett was detained. A search of his truck turned up methamphetamine and heroin underneath the gloves on the dashboard. Drug paraphernalia was also found. In a pocket behind the passenger seat, deputies found a still cold bottle of Mike’s Hard Lemonade and a bottle of Seagram’s 7 whiskey.

Bennett was arrested. He was charged with reckless driving, two counts possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He was cited for possession of an open container and driving with his license suspended. He was also charged with an outstanding warrant for violation of probation with an underlying charge of battery.
