Project ASAP Helps Haitian Creole Speakers NOW
Thanks to the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys (CFFK) and Literacy Volunteers of America (LVA), “Project ASAP” offers immediate assistance free of charge teaching English and life skills for Haitian Creole speakers with LVA Tutor of the Month Carl-hens Pentoffsen Gaston,
“I am from Port Au Prince Haiti,” says Gaston. “In 2015 I left Haiti to go to Mexico where I worked and studied communications for three years at the UNIVERCIDAD AUTÓNOMA DE LA CIUDAD DE MEXICO and started a family.
While I was studying communications, I was also teaching French and basic English to kids in primary and secondary school in Mexico.
Three years later, I decided to move to America with my son and girlfriend. Ever since, I’ve been working and helping the Haitian community in the city with information that will benefit them and the City of Key West. I work in hospitality as an assistant executive housekeeper. I also help people with immigration applications and notifications. I speak five languages –French, Creole, English,Spanish and Portuguese. Everyone sees me as a leader because of my multilingual skills.
Three months ago I started teaching Basic English at LVA inside the Key West Lions Club– we have 30 students for now! We have class at LIONS CLUB on TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY from 6 pm to 8pm. We have a van available to come to pick you up for the two hours of class and drop you back to your location after class.
I own a company: PG RIDES AND SERVICES; we provide services like help with tax applications, work applications and notifications from immigration…all in the context of an English lesson. You are more than welcome to join us for our class or for any service that I mentioned. If you would like to join us you can contact me at 305-680-2890 or [email protected]“
