Pregnant Women Cautioned During Flu Season

The Florida Department of Health in Monroe County wants to encourage all Floridians to do their part to prevent getting seasonal flu and spreading it to others by getting the flu vaccine.  Recently, there was a sharp increase in the number of pregnant women in Florida who reported having the flu.   Pregnant women are at higher risk for severe complications from influenza infection.  The CDC recommends everyone six months and older, including those who are pregnant, receive the flu vaccination.  A flu shot has been shown to protect pregnant women from the flu.  Flu vaccines are available at the health department clinics in Key West, Marathon, and Tavernier.   In addition to the health department clinics, the flu vaccine is also offered in many locations, including doctor’s offices, clinics, pharmacies, and health centers.
