Poinciana Elementary School – Principal, Dr. Larry Schmiegel

Superintendent Mark Porter is pleased to announce his recommendation for the new principal at Poinciana Elementary School – Dr. Larry Schmiegel. Dr. Schmiegel was selected from an outstanding group of applicants that included qualified individuals from the Monroe County Schools and from the State of Florida. The selection process was led by Dr. Ramon Dawkins, Executive Director of Human Resources and included two rounds of personal interviews that involved stakeholders from the school and community.

Dr. Schmiegel is currently serving as the Principal at Frederick Leighton Elementary School in the Oswego City School District, Oswego, New York He was previously a building level administrator in the Syracuse City School District, Syracuse, New York, with additional administrative experience in the Kingman Unified School District in Kingman, Arizona. Dr. Schmiegel’s educational background includes an MBA from Columbia College, Columbia, Missouri, an advanced master’s degree in education leadership from LeMoyne College, Syracuse, New York and an Education Doctorate degree from St. John Fisher College, Rochester, New York where his qualitative research focused on school principal support.

His leadership and passion for improving student achievement are well suited to meet the needs of students and staff at Poinciana” states Superintendent Mark T. Porter, “I’m excited to see what he will do with this new leadership opportunity.”

From his perspective, Dr. Schmiegel shares, “I am excited to enter this new chapter in my professional life. I have studied the accomplishments and opportunities at Poinciana and I am confident that the staff and myself working together can bring about the continued improvement that is needed for the students and families of the Poinciana community.”

Dr. Schmiegel is anticipated to begin working as early as July 18th or as soon thereafter as possible in light of the challenges of his relocation.
